What’s more, the company will donate part of their proceeds to Polar Bears International – so not only will you get a great night’s sleep, you’ll also be saving the bears while you snooze.

And so to bed, sleepyhead

Not getting enough zzzs? Then it’s time to be more creative with your bedroom, says Beth McDonald

WE SPEND around a third of our lives doing it — so it’s no surprise that sleeping (or not) can have a huge impact on our wellbeing.

‘Increased risk of diabetes, raised blood pressure, heart disease, reduced immune function, obesity and a reduced life expectancy...’ Sleep expert David Gibson is reeling off just some of the things we can expect to happen if we don’t catch enough kip over the long term, but loss of sleep can make us irritable and lead to a loss of short-term memory, as well as a decreased ability to concentrate.

Getting your bedroom environment right is essential — not only for helping you get to sleep easily, but also making sure that what you do get is quality sleep. ‘Making your bedroom a cool, dark, quiet cave is a good place to start,’ says David.

‘The room should be clutter-free and kept only for sleep and sex. Taking any technology that enables you to work into your bedroom will only keep your brain active, with the ‘blue-light’ emitted tricking your brain into thinking that it’s time to get up. A cooler rather than a hotter bedroom is ideal, as your body temperature is designed to drop both before and as you sleep and keep the room as dark as you can — use dimmed lights if you’re reading and black-out blinds if you’re woken by early morning light.’

Following this advice should all make it easier for you to get to sleep, but what if you’re rudely awoken? ‘The biggest source of noise tends to be from a snoring partner,’ admits David. ‘Getting them to lose weight or reduce their alcohol intake helps, as does getting them to sleep on their side rather than their back.’

How to choose a mattress

THE SLEEPBEAR (sleepbear.co.uk) combines a latex top layer with a memory foam middle and a dense support layer underneath. I tried the double (£599), which was delivered rolled up in a box (handy if, like mine, your home is on the compact side, although still heavy) and easily unrolls and ‘inflates’. It’s as wonderfully comfortable as it sounds, moulding to my shape and providing support that my previous mattress never did. What’s more, the company will donate part of their proceeds to Polar Bears International – so not only will you get a great night’s sleep, you’ll also be saving the bears while you snooze. AD

All of Sleepbear’s mattresses are hand made in the UK by their family run business...”

“They offer a trial period of 100 days trial meaning you can avoid wandering around shops lying on mattresses in front of strangers (unless that’s your thang of course)....”

Making Guests Cosy with our Sleepbear Mattress

What would be your top 3 things for a good and serene night’s sleep in a guest room ?

For me it would be the temperature being nice and cool, the palette of the room being soothing – certain hues such as reds or some yellows and loud wallpapers are a stimulant so a nice calm shade of white to keep your mind clear or think blues, greys and deep greens to relax.

But most importantly it would be the comfort of the bed. So I gave this quite a bit of thought when updating our spare room recently because obviously we want our visitors to feel really welcome. We spend 1/ 3 of our lives sleeping so it’s got to be right ?

I did quite some research in to mattresses and found Sleepbear who ticked on all of my ‘ initial interest ‘ boxes on paper being that they offer a trial period of 100 days trial meaning you can avoid wandering around shops lying on mattresses in front of strangers ( unless that’s your thang of course ), very quick delivery, a 10 year guarantee.

All of Sleepbear’s mattresses are hand made in the UK by their family run business right through the process.. There’s a little video on the website showing you it all which I found pretty interesting. The mattresses have 3 layers. For this double mattress for our guest bed the top layer is 4cm thickness of a very perforated high quality pure latex that naturally regulates your body temperature and offers extreme comfort , then 6cm of memory foam that moulds and adapts your to your sleeping movements and then a 15cm super dense base which is the firm foundation and offers the support needed.

What is really cool about Sleepbear ( and my daughter’s were extra impressed by this bit ) is that they have teamed up with Polar Bears International and give a percentage of proceeds each year to the organisation.

What better way to actually review the Sleepbear Mattress than to ask the girls to try it out and make a rare appearance on the blog. Then I tried it out the second night… y’know just to be totally sure…

Here’s the girls’ review of their night’s sleep in 5 words …

Relaxing, soft, bouncy, comfy and delightful !

I found my night on the mattress really good. I don’t always manage to sleep through the night but I did and felt well supported. So much so I didn’t actually want to get up in the morning to be honest.

So we are looking forward to our first guest staying now that we know it’ll keep them comfy.

What factors are important to you when you have friends or family staying over ? Leave a comment – as ever I love to hear from you :)

Having slept on my sleepbear mattress for nearly three months now i’m happy to report that its incredibly comfortable...”

“ I settled upon the sleepbear for its clever combination of three layers that provide natural elasticity, perfect support and temperature control....”

breathe in, chill out

the depth of my new sleepbear memory foam mattress* atop the low platform base helps prevent any comparison to student-day futon-bed living and creates a wonderfully sumptuous sleep experience. after reaching out to some of my favourite blogging pals for their mattress-in-a-box recommendations, i settled upon the sleepbear for its clever combination of three layers that provide natural elasticity, perfect support and temperature control. firm support was a key criteria for me, and sleepbear’s super dense base provides a solid foundation for the memory foam middle that moulds and adapts to provide tailor made support regardless of your sleeping positon. this is then topped with a pure latex sleep surface, offering ‘cloudlike’ comfort and bounce, with perforations that allow it to naturally regulate body temperature.

the pure latex surface is a sustainable natural material sourced from sustainable hevea rubber tree plantations and processed into latex foam by the largest latex manufacturer in europe, which utilises 100% green energy and recycles 95% of the water they use. if you’re not familiar with the rubber tree – hevea brasiliensis – it grows in many tropical areas and produces the sap from which latex is derived. this sap is tapped to flow from the tree and organically harvested for latex foam production. each tree can live for up to 100 years, and the number of trees tapped for a king size sleepbear mattress will over the course of 1 year remove up to 28 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere – impressive, huh? you can find out more about sleepbear latex here if you’re interested.

having slept on my sleepbear mattress for nearly three months now i’m happy to report that its an incredibly comfortable mattress and i’ve had no trouble at all sleeping. as i generally sleep on my front or side, i’ve previously found memory foam mattresses to feel a little too squishy and really haven’t enjoyed the feeling of sinking too far into the surface. thankfully this doesn’t happen at all with my sleepbear mattress – there’s definitely a little give as it moulds around your body but certainly nothing like as much as i’ve experienced with others. the only time i’ve really noticed a touch too much give is when i’ve sat up in bed to watch netflix on my laptop and to be honest, its been a welcome push to relegate television watching to the living room and keep my bedroom as a blue light free zone, which i’m sure has also contributed to my enhanced quality of sleep. sleepbear offer a 100-night free trial so you can be confident it’s the best choice for you – i’d be at the end of my 100-day trial now and definitely wouldn’t give it up!

“Giant thumbs up for giving me back a little bit of my life...”

“I suffer badly with back pain after both children, but since we swapped to Sleepbear, I have been able to withstand sitting and standing for longer...”

Sleepbear Mattress Review | Getting A Good Night’s Sleep

We were recently given the opportunity to review the new Sleepbear mattress. As someone who suffers from back problems, I was a little uneasy about changing from the trusty mattress we’ve had for over 8 years now…as it was the only place I was able to get comfortable when my back flared up. However, knowing that it’s recommended you replace your mattress every 8 years, we had to bite the bullet.

Sleepbear is one of those mattresses that arrives rolled up in a tiny box…it’s rather unusual really. In fact hubs had never seen this before and thought we had been sent a camping mattress! The box itself it about the size of a wheelie bin (we received a king size mattress). One of the key points is the fact that Sleepbear is currently the only manufacturer who doesn’t fold the mattress in half before it’s rolled. This means that the integrity of the mattress isn’t compromised and settles better.

The mattress is encased in plastic, so it’s easy to get upstairs (another benefit!) You should have seen us trying to wrestle the old mattress not only off the bed, but downstairs and out the house…well, lets just say, we aren’t removal people! Once out of the plastic, it needs to be left to rest and settle for 4-6 hours to come back up to size.

With it’s striking dark grey and teal piping, the mattress itself is made up of 3 layers. A solid foam base, a layer of memory foam and a top layer of latex. All encased in a super soft and slightly squishy outer skin.

Our old mattress was memory foam and poor hubs has hated it from the day we got it. Although memory foam is notorious for comfort…it is also known for it’s ability to dip and you end up with quite a noticeable body mark. Not so bad if you are light, but you do notice during the night that you keep rolling back into your little ‘body nook’. This is why Sleepbear developed the latex layer. To counteract and bounce back quickly. Maintaining the support from head to toe.

Like any mattress, it takes a week to get used to. The firmness level was different, the height of our bed became lower (our old mattress was so thick, we had to buy superking sheets to tuck under it) but once you get past the settle in period, it really is the best nights sleep I’ve ever had.

I suffer badly with back pain after both children, but since we swapped to Sleepbear, I have been able to withstand sitting and standing for longer during the day and I’m not having to spend the evening in bed anymore. So it goes without saying that I am giving it a giant thumbs up for giving me back a little bit of my life.

If you want to try a Sleepbear mattress, they offer a 100 night trial as well as a 10 year guarantee.

Disclosure: We were sent a Sleepbear mattress to review, but all opinions and great nights sleeps are 100% honest.

“It takes time to adapt to new mattresses but I could tell the difference from our previous one straight away. My whole body felt supported, not just parts of it....”

“I’ve woken up most mornings having had a full nights sleep and NO back pain at all...”

At Home: Sleepbear, Hope Fashion & Christmas Card Writing

Happy Sunday chums! Up to anything nice? Decking the halls? Shopping for Christmas? Or hiding from the world under your cosy duvet?

This month is going to fly by so I’m trying to take it all in and enjoy the moments that have made Christmas so memorable in the past; trying to embrace the stress and all that jazz (see my previous post on tips for life on the go at Christmas). One of those traditions is writing Christmas cards to friends and family.

I know a lot of people give writing Christmas cards a miss nowadays but it’s just something that I have fond memories of and it’s a nice way to make contact with friends you haven’t spoken to much, bar the odd Facebook gesture. The only thing I don’t like is gathering all the addresses together (sends frantic WhatsApp messages).

Due to a delivery of a new mattress, this year’s card writing set up was in bed (any excuse), wearing loungewear, eating stolen and drinking hot chocolate. I know how to do Christmas, my friends. The charity cards are from John Lewis and I love the combination of colours of navy blue, blush pink and gold in a Nordic design. Nice, right?

As for the mattress, let me introduce you to my friends at Sleepbear. We’ve had our old mattress for around 6 years but it’s provided no support or comfort for the last two years. I’d wake up every couple of hours with back pain and spend the rest of the night trying to get comfortable again. I’ve got a roof over my head so I hate complaining about my sleep, but guys it really was a pain (literally). So I was delighted to collaborate with Sleepbear to see if I could have uninterrupted sleep for a change and just in time for Christmas.

It arrived compressed and boxed which we rolled out onto our bed frame, and immediately (although you should probably leave it for a few minutes) jumped on. It takes time to adapt to new mattresses but I could tell the difference from our previous one straight away. My whole body felt supported, not just parts of it (which is why I think I’d wake up in pain previously).

The Sleepbear hypoallergenic mattress is designed and made in the UK and is made of pure latex, and three clever layers that provide extra bounce and cloud like/unbelievable comfort.

The week we received the mattress I couldn’t give an accurate opinion on its comfort as I’d strained myself too much at Roller Derby, and had trouble getting myself in to bed at all, but since then my sleep has steadily improved. I’ve woken up most mornings having had a full nights sleep and NO back pain at all.

I’ll provide a more in depth look a the hypoallergenic mattress after a few months, as it will be interesting to see how my body adapts to it over time. Plus I’ll be having a Christmas break from skating soon so that should provide more insight. In the meantime here’s some info on those cushy layers:

1| Pure latex top layer (4cm) – sumptuous comfort & bounce, naturally regulates body temperature. Perforated for extra airflow.

2| Memory foam middle layer (6cm) – responds and adapts, no matter your sleeping position.

3| Super dense base layer (15cm) – the foundation that cushions & supports you where you need it most to ensure you wake feeling rested and revitalised each & every day.

Now then, how many days to the Christmas holidays?

“As you move, the mattress follows you and your shape, nicely hugging you to make sure you are comfy....”

“We looked locally and tried the mattresses, read the descriptions but got so confused with all the details and information! Sleepbear mattress is different, there is no technical lingo and there is only one type of mattress that comes in various sizes!...”

Introducing Sleepbear – A New Type Of Mattress

Today I am really excited to share this post with you. I got the opportunity to work with Sleepbear UK and received their amazing mattress* for a review. I was very keen to work with them not only because I got a chance to review a great product but also because of their work ethic and values.

My husband and I bought our dream home in July and went looking for a new bed and mattress soon after as our old mattress had seen better days.. When you start rolling over in bed as soon as your husband turns you know you need a new one! We looked locally and tried the mattresses, read the descriptions but got so confused with all the details and information! Sleepbear mattress is different, there is no technical lingo and there is only one type of mattress that comes in various sizes! So all you have to do is choose the size you want and order it! The delivery was very quick too, it only took a couple of days.

Don’t expect a massive trailer with a huge mattress to arrive. The technology Sleepbear uses ensure the mattress is neatly rolled and comes compressed and boxed. Watch the video below to see how they do it, it’s pretty amazing!

Delivery

At first, I was a bit sceptical on how can a mattress be compressed to this size. Surely it will be flimsy, flat and can’t be that durable.. I could not have been more wrong!!! The real magic happens when you open the box up! Once you take the plastic sheet off and unroll it, it takes it’s shape! I left the mattress for about an hour as I went out for a walk with Coco. When we got back, the mattress was ‘ready’.

I could not wait to try it out. Soft, comfy ohh we were in for a treat tonight I thought!!

I am not a very good sleeper, I find it hard to switch off at night time and I also tend to wake up several times during the night. I spend at least 30 minutes to an hour trying to fall asleep as I have lists I am making in my head, things I suddenly remember I need to do and keep trying to figure things out! Whilst, my husband goes to zzzz land as soon as his head hits the pillow!

First night

I tried to relax and not to think too much about it and enjoy the mattress. It was comfortable and it literally hugged the body, it was very comfortable indeed. It is hard to explain whether it is soft or hard or medium.. it is just right!! As you move, the mattress follows you and your shape, nicely hugging you to make sure you are comfy. No springs digging in the back and no rolling over whenever my husband did! YES! I woke up very happy with it and did not quite want to get out of bed that morning.

30 night sleep

Sleepbear suggests at least 30 day trial of their mattress and I can see why. The more you use it the more comfortable it gets, it adapts to your body and then as by magic it springs back to its original shape!

The mattress also got the seal of approval from Coco!

Why Sleepbear?? I can only say – because it is different and it works! The mattress is not only comfortable, it is also hypoallergenic, controls temperature and gives perfect support.

Did you know, you can actually have a 100 night trial – this is how confident Sleepbear are that they have created the perfect mattress. And trust me after the 100 days you will not want to return it!

No need to go to the shop, try hundreds of mattresses and get confused! Sleepbear have created the perfect concept and it really works! Not only that, each sale contributes towards Polar Bears International – the charity Sleepbear works with.

"Here at Sleepbear we want to give something back and with the ever prominent environmental issue of melting sea ice, we’ve partnered with Polar Bears International. Each year, a percentage of the proceeds from our Sleepbear mattress sales will go directly to this organisation to help them support the conservation of polar bears."

*Disclosure: This post has been made in collaboration with Sleepbear UK, and the mattress for this review has been provided to me free of charge. You can view our full policy here. All opinions and ideas expressed are my own and not influenced in any way.

“We’ve been sleeping on our new sleepbear mattress for over a month now and absolutely LOVE it....”

Bedtime feels so luxurious now, just like those glorious nights spent sleeping in a hotel but now it’s every night. It’s truly perfect and the best Christmas present two sleep deprived parents could ask for.

Bed Time With Our New Sleepbear Mattress

A tale of 4 bears

Once upon a time there was a family of bears. Like most ordinary bears one of their favourite things to do in the whole wide world was sleep.

Only the littlest bear in the family was different. She didn’t really like to sleep. Instead she preferred to wriggle, play and kiss mummys nose, all night long.

Although this was very cute, it made Mummy and Daddy Bear sad. They loved sleeping so much but they loved their baby bear more. So they tossed and turned all night long, pleading with their little one to go to sleep.

It didn’t work and when they woke in the morning, Daddy was grizzly and Mummy was like a bear with a sore head.

Something needed to change. Mummy decided it was time they got a super king bed and a brand new mattress from Sleepbear.

Sleepbear made the finest mattresses in all the land. Not too soft, not too hard, in fact they were just right.

Perfect for a family of bears who loved to sleep. Plus there was room in the new bed for Mummy, Daddy, Little Bear AND Baby Bear.

The mattress was unlike any they had ever seen before. It’s unique design used 3 special layers including a pure latex top layer, a memory foam middle layer and a dense base layer.

All 3 layers had special powers, the bottom supporting, the middle contouring and the top layer which made the mattress soft and bouncy like a cloud.

Mummy and Daddy Bear loved their new mattress dearly. Sinking into it felt like receiving the biggest of bear hugs, supportive and so so snuggly.

With a 100 days to test their new mattress to see if it was just right for them, they pondered hibernating all winter just to be sure. But it was obvious after just one day that the mattress would be here to stay. And with a 10 year guarantee they knew they would love their mattress for many many years to come.

They were hopeful that by then Baby Bear may just have discovered a love of sleep too, maybe even in her own bed!

Thank you to Sleepbear, who asked us to road test their brand new luxury, hypoallergenic mattress. We’ve been sleeping on our new sleepbear mattress for over a month now and absolutely LOVE it. Despite not getting a full nights sleep, the sleep we do get on our mattress is wonderful. Bedtime feels so luxurious now, just like those glorious nights spent sleeping in a hotel but now it’s every night. It’s truly perfect and the best Christmas present two sleep deprived parents could ask for.

Read more about the benefits of a Sleepbear mattress, how the sleepbear mattress is made or the other great reviews from other Sleepbear owners. We also made an unboxing video so you can watch us when we first get our mattress!

The Sleepbear mattress was gifted for review purposes however all thoughts are our own. We couldn’t be happier with our amazing new mattress!

“With this mattress, it’s almost as though you get the benefits of a soft and firm mattress all in one. I have felt so comfortable in our new bed, that I have been loathed to leave it.....”

I would be lying if I said I hadn’t spent more days working from bed, than I had previously. Since trying our our Sleepbear mattress, I have been getting a better nights sleep.

A Sleepbear Mattress Review

Anyone who reads my blog regularly will know we are in the midst of doing up our family home. In fact, we have been in the midst of doing up our home for nearly the last five years. Phew, how time flies when you’re knee deep in dust and paint. It has been a challenge to say the least.

Over the last 6 months, we have made a real push to move things forward. We had a bit of a break in getting things done whilst Elodie was very young, but now she’s two, we can’t rely on the ‘baby’ excuse for not striding on. Just under a month ago, Chris and I moved into our new bedroom on the top floor of our home and were luck enough to be sent a new Sleepbear mattress to try out on our brand new bed.

If you haven’t already heard of them, Sleepbear manufacture luxury mattresses, here in the UK. Their latex mattresses are naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, mould and bacteria, and are made in a combination of three layers. The top layer is super spongy and soft, designed to help regulate your body temperature. Whilst the lower two layers are denser, offering bounce and support.

Our mattress arrived, rolled and packaged in a large cardboard box. It also came with a little goody bag containing a sleep mask and a cosy grey nightshirt, which was a lovely added bonus. When I unpackaged the mattress, there was a strange smell and residue on it. It smelt slightly chemically, which may have been due to the silica gel it was packaged with to keep it dry, I don’t know. Either way, after airing for 24 hours, the smell and residue disappeared completely.

The mattress is aesthetically pleasing, with a stippled top layer, bright blue piping, and a stylish grey band around its outer edge. I like the grey band so much, that it almost seems a shame to cover it with a sheet. Talking of sheets, the mattress is reasonably deep. So, if you buy this mattress, make sure you have quality sheets that don’t skimp on material, or you may be constantly pulling the corners back down.

I can definitely feel the benefit of the different layers. The top layer is cosy and comfortable, whilst the lower layer supports my back and hips. With this mattress, it’s almost as though you get the benefits of a soft and firm mattress all in one. I have felt so comfortable in our new bed, that I have been loathed to leave it. I would be lying if I said I hadn’t spent more days working from bed, than I had previously.

Since trying our our Sleepbear mattress, I have been getting a better nights sleep. Though it’s hard to say whether this has everything to do with the mattress, or more to do with leaving our headache of a pink bedroom behind us. Also, we opted for a larger bed in our new room, so Chris and I have more space to ourselves. Either way, I do think the comfort of our new mattress has helped improve my sleep, even if only a little.

In the interests of trying to make this a balanced review, I have tried very hard to think of some negative points, but aside from the smell, that disappears, I honestly can’t think of any. I am so pleased with the quality and comfort of our new Sleepbear mattress and would certainly recommend them to friends and family. We are so pleased with ours, that as soon as their pillows are back in stock, I will be rushing to put our order in!

I have put together a little film review about my experience of using the Sleepbear mattress, if you’d like to have a watch.

*Thanks so much to Sleepbear for sending us a mattress to try out free of charge. We are absolutely thrilled with it!

“More important than that however, is the mattress. Our new one is from Sleepbear and we couldn’t be happier with it.....”

It’s firmer than we’re used to, but that came as a very pleasant surprise. And it’s higher too, which is great – I shouldn’t be talking aesthetics here – but it looks grander and more substantial when it’s made up.

Nighty Nights, Decadent Days, and Our Bedroom Makeover

It’s been a while in the making. Our new bedroom. And it still isn’t finished. But it’s finished enough to share some bits of it. And it’s finished enough that I wake up every morning and feel that I don’t want to leave. And I can’t wait to jump into bed each night either. So instead of just sharing some pictures and telling you how it all came about – well, I might share a bit of that too. I’m going to instead, share my tips on creating a bedroom that you don’t want to leave. Whatever your style. Because when it comes down to it, I think we all want need to feel pampered and special. And especially in the bedroom.

There are a few things to consider before choosing paint colours and buying accessories. And it’s all to do with the bed. Because we all know how much time we spend in it, and we all know that our comfort and even our health depend on us choosing the right one. Personally I prefer a soft headboard, and one that is big enough to rest against comfortably even when I’m sitting up. More important than that however, is the mattress. Our new one is from Sleepbear and we couldn’t be happier with it. It’s firmer than we’re used to, but that came as a very pleasant surprise. And it’s higher too, which is great – I shouldn’t be talking aesthetics here – but it looks grander and more substantial when it’s made up. The mattress might very well be the main reason I don’t want to leave my bed in the morning.

Collaborative Post with Sleepbear who use pure latex in their mattresses and pillows. The real deal. Sleepbear’s simply innovative mattress design is the result of the clever combination of 3 layers. The latex top layer gives the mattress its cool feel, special bounce and cloud like comfort.

“Did you ever think a mattress would help a polar bear? Well if you invest in a mattress from Sleepbear it will do exactly that!....”

Our 5 year old seems rather happy with the comfort and I definitely think it’s the comfiest mattress that I have ever tried.

A Mattress That Helps Polar Bears?!

Did you ever think a mattress would help a polar bear? Well if you invest in a mattress from Sleepbear it will do exactly that! Every year Sleepbear give a percentage of their profits to Polar Bear International to aid polar bear conservation. As polar bears are endangered it’s a fantastic cause to support!

Benefits of a Sleepbear Mattress

Aside supporting polar bears, Sleepbear makes the most luxurious mattresses for a good night sleep. They consist of 3 layers, the top being a latex layer that helps regulate body temperature (cool in summer and warm in winter), gives a little bounce and most importantly is naturally hypoallergnic, so no dust mites or bacteria lurking here.

Then there is the memory foam, which moulds to your shape, but unlike other memory foam mattresses the latex helps the memory foam bounce back into shape so you’re not stuck in a dip in the bed each night.

The final super dense base layer is 15cm thick and supports you all night long. All three layers are encased in a soft knit fabric which looks and feels great.

You don’t need to choose between different firmness, you simply let them know what size you want as the Sleepbear mattress has been designed to work for everyone. Much easier than working out what firmness of mattress you would like!

Packaging

As with most mattresses nowadays, they arrive vacuum packed ready to rip open and spring into shape. However, the Sleepbear mattress is packaged in a large branded cardboard box that reveals a little goody bag when you open it.

The goody bag contains information on how to look after your mattress, a postcard about the partnership with Polar Bears International, an eye maska and an oversized t-shirt to wear in bed. All inside a drawstring bag. This is a lovely little surprise to find when you open your box!

Beneath the goody bag the mattress is well packaged in a plastic bag and then vacuum packed inside.

Opening and Comfort

Once out the packaging it was fairly easy to lift upstairs onto the bed, where we ripped open the packaging for it to unroll onto the bed. It wasn’t a huge violent jump out of the packaging like we have had on previous spring mattresses, but slowly unrolls.

As you can see the lucky recipient of the mattress is my 5 year old, his previous mattress was pretty useless after 4 years of him (and often us!) sleeping on it. The jumping on the bed didn’t help either!

He was definitely pleased to get a comfy new mattress to sleep on and I no longer worry about him waking up because he’s uncomfortable. Our 2 year old was rather excited by it too and had to have a feel of the mattress too.

The mattress was left to air for a few hours before we made the bed for our son and tested the mattress to see how comfy it was.

Comfort

Well the verdict is that the mattress is incredibly comfy and supportive, despite me having reservations when I first pressed it and thought it was quite soft. Our 5 year old seems rather happy with the comfort and I definitely think it’s the comfiest mattress that I have ever tried.

So if you’re looking for a good mattress that will give you the support you need, is hypoallergenic, incredibly comfy and support a fantastic charity then check out Sleepbear here. And if you’re still not convinced then you can trial the mattress for 100 nights to see if you like it, if you don’t it will be collected again free of charge!

(I’d like to pretend this was us just casually hanging out at home but erm,, it’s not!)

My sleeping problems

Oh I do love my sleep and a good mattress is really important to me. I am a ventilator user and so I sleep at night connected to a breathing machine. This means I cannot move around too much and sometimes I wake up stiff and uncomfortable and overheated (it’s not much fun sleeping with a mask on your face when its hot!)

Memory foam helped me with the stiffness but not the overheating. I knew I needed something different from my normal mattress, my sleep quality wasn’t good

Why Sleepbear is different

I am no mattress technician but I could see and feel straight away that this mattress was unique.

It is made up of 3 layers. It has a latex top which provides natural moisture regulation and ventilation to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. Underneath is a responsive memory foam middle layer which shapes to to your body while the dense base layer allows the mattress to fully adapt and supports you while you sleep. often memory foam can make you feel a bit ‘stuck’ .

At Sleepbear they’ve addressed this with with the combination of a stretchy Lycra® knit and bouncy latex top lay so movement in easy.

The Sleepbear mattress and pillows have been made in Britain and developed with extensive research.

The Sleepbear experience

I was a bit over excited about seeing if Sleepbear lived up to its promises. They sent me a lovely welcome pack too with a cool nightshirt which proclaims I’d rather be sleeping. A lovely touch.

The mattress was simple to unroll and ready to go that very night.

It was immediately both cool and comfortable. It felt softer than I was used to but supportive and flexible. I was able to move easily and had no aches or stiffness in the morning, My husband slept like a log and declared it wonderful from day 1. I tool a night or two to adapt but actually overslept this morning it was THAT comfortable.

Sleepbear is a big hit in our house.

“We’ve been battling another phase of disturbed sleep and, finally, seem to have an answer.....”

Sleepbear kindly sent us one of their mattresses to review and, I’m telling you, it’s been a revelation. The mattresses are made from memory foam, but are also covered with a layer of latex. This means they can spring back to their original shape quickly, while also offering the support that memory foam gives.

Solving our children’s sleep issues with #SleepBear

Back when I was a brand new mum six years ago the one thing getting me through the sleepless nights was the promise of unbroken sleep in years to come. HA HA HA. Little did I know that once I became a mum of two, my children would tag team with their sleep dramas and regularly keep me awake in the small hours. Children’s sleep issues are real, people.

Lately, my six year old has been carrying the sleep baton while her two year old sister sleeps like a dream. Oh, the irony. The thing is, with Frog, there is always a reason for her waking, even it it isn’t immediately clear at first. So recently, we’ve been on an investigative hunt to find out the cause of the waking and try to figure out how to solve it.

Here’s what we found out…

Frog has a really vivid imagination and often has bad dreams, or wakes herself up talking (again, due to those dreams). It’s nothing new and only becomes an issue when she can’t get herself back to sleep again. It’s not that she’s upset by the dreams – sometimes she can’t even remember them – it’s that she wakes up and then finds herself unable to drop off. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve woken to find her spookily standing next to me in the middle of the night, waiting for me to roll over so she can get into bed with us.

When I ask her why she comes into our bed, the answer is an obvious one. “I’m lonely”, she says, or “I wanted a cuddle from you.” This is all completely natural and normal – she is only six after all – but it means I spend the rest of the night getting kicked by my starfishing child, or trying to steal back a corner of duvet. Inevitably, either me or the NLM will end up admitting defeat and going to sleep in her bed (while she stays in ours). Not ideal.

A few years ago we had a similar issue. Back when Frog was three she started waking up and coming into our bed. In fact, I wrote about it here, at the time. We discovered that it wasn’t the waking that was the problem, but the getting back to sleep. She’d always been able to settle herself back to sleep, even as a baby, but suddenly she seemed to struggle. This was largely because we had recently moved house and she was going through lots of changes, but also – and most importantly – because she wasn’t comfortable. Getting her a new bed helped MASSIVELY and, suddenly we were back to full nights’ sleep again.

Until recently, that is. We’ve been battling another phase of disturbed sleep and, finally, seem to have an answer. Isn’t it funny how when you’re in the midst of sleep deprivation you don’t have the perspective needed to work out if there’s an answer? Actually, it’s not very funny at all, is it?

Anyway, Sleepbear kindly sent us one of their mattresses to review and, I’m telling you, it’s been a revelation. The mattresses are made from memory foam, but are also covered with a layer of latex. This means they can spring back to their original shape quickly, while also offering the support that memory foam gives.

Having slept on Frog’s old mattress a few times – and tossed and turned over dodgy springs myself – I’m cross with myself that I didn’t twig her sleep issues may be down to something as simple as a lumpy old mattress. I blame sleep deprivation for my stupidity.

Anyway, thank you Sleepbear for solving our six year old’s sleep problem. Fingers crossed the two year old doesn’t decide to hit a new “phase” soon.

I’ve chatted a bit more about sleep in my latest vlog where you can also see the mattress in action (i.e. actually being set up – not just being slept on. That would be weird.)…

“After many years of use our current mattress had started to dip and even though it was lovely and soft it wasn't really supportive to sleep on so i was eager to try something different.....”

It's thicker than our old one so we felt much higher up (seriously we felt like we were on a throne for the first week) kinda like the novelty of being in a hotel bed but at home! it's also firmer.

Home | A Simple Way To Sleep Better

It's no secret sleep is important. a bad nights sleep has a negative impact on my mood and ability to function, whereas a good nights sleep basically makes me a happier and healthier human, win.

The run up to christmas is usually quite a stressful and busy time for me both professionally and personally so when i was offered a new mattress by sleepbear* to test it was a huge no brainer. i mean a new mattress is exciting right.. but it was also a great opportunity to try and get into a healthier sleep routine. sometimes i sleep really well but i have periods where my sleep is incredibly restless, i was more than a little curious to see if there was any difference after changing what i slept on.

After many years of use our current mattress had started to dip and even though it was lovely and soft it wasn't really supportive to sleep on so i was eager to try something different. the sleepbear mattress has a nifty 3 layer combo- a pure latex top layer for comfort and bounce, responsive memory foam in the middle and a dense bottom layer for support. the other bonus of a pure latex top layer is temperature control, geeky but true. because of it's moisture regulation and ventilation it helps keep you cooler in summer and warmer in winter which is pretty neat. (it's also hypoallergenic and so wonderfully resilient to dust mites, hurrah.)

First up our swanky new mattress arrived.. in a box! WOOOO (ok, i know this is quite common nowadays but i was a boxed mattress virgin & not having to manoeuvre a double mattress up narrow victorian stairs was ace.) i'll admit we were both acted like excited kids whilst ripping open the plastic, it started to plump up as we unrolled it which was pretty cool.

Kipper also thoroughly enjoyed the whole process (and the empty cardboard box afterwards...)

This is what it looked like when we first rolled it onto out ikea frame back in october, we left it for the rest of the day to 'breathe' after being boxed up before we put the sheets back on. we've been sleeping on the mattress for 2 months now and i have to say we absolutely give it the thumbs up!

As to the mattress firstly it's thicker than our old one so we felt much higher up (seriously we felt like we were on a throne for the first week) kinda like the novelty of being in a hotel bed but at home! it's also firmer which felt weird the first time we lay on it as we were so used to dipping into a mattress but after a couple of nights we both concluded we totally preferred it. the memory foam comfortably adjusts to your sleeping position but you still feel lifted and supported. (james and i usually liked different firmness's of mattress but we both agree that this one suits us both.. which is kinda a big deal.)

After we put down the new mattress we invested in an a-mazingly fluffy new winter quilt and some new bedding, the whole combination has made going to bed feel like a giant hug. sleepbear offer a 100 night home trial so you can test the mattress yourself to make sure its right for you, personally i think it's a great option especially as its an important investment. if you don't like it they'll come and take it away for free, easy peasy, no hidden costs.

We both feel more refreshed and because of this we've become more aware of the benefits of sleeping better. we've made some other changes lately too- we've removed the tv from our bedroom and cut down on the amount of time we spend online late at night, i used to say goodnight to james then scroll through instagram for another hour or worse, i'd start sending emails... gah. now we're way more invested in sleeping better- a few simple changes have been really beneficial and i feel like i'm getting a deeper and more restful nights sleep.

I don't know about you but i'm excited for some lie in's in the coming weeks! the only thing i enjoy more than sleeping right now is hitting the snooze button.

Back soon

“When our mattress arrived and we lay on it, we both literally went 'OH YES!' It was SO different to what we had been sleeping on.....”

You can see how substantial it is (and it's lovely design!), and it has 100% kept it's shape since we started sleeping on it. It has a firmness to it, but still feels like you kind of sink into it each night.

Bedroom Makeover & Bed Upgrade

When we moved into the new house, one of the first things we needed to purchase was a new bed. We needed an additional double for the spare room so my parents could stay. So before we even moved, I'd earmarked this copper bed frame from Made.com for our room, and ordered it as soon as we got the keys.

As the bed was quite a big spend, I decided to order a relatively cheap mattress and bedding - bad move! I should have taken my own advice and not scrimped on the things that need to do a good job. The mattress was really hard and too thin, and the bedding was too light and flimsy. The hubby wasn't happy and I was kicking myself for my less than satisfactory purchases. But luckily, that was when two fabulous companies stepped in to sort things out.

Firstly, Sleepbear introduced me to their British-made, latex-topped mattress. A new family run business, Sleepbear have developed a 'one mattress suits all' design, which they believe is the ultimate in comfort, support and a good night's sleep. It seems the pure latex they use within the mattress is key to everything - it contours to your body and it's elasticity allows the mattress to bounce back. Not only that, latex is naturally hypoallergenic, so fends off dust mites, mould and bacteria, and due the materials open cell structure it is super breathable, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

When our mattress arrived and we lay on it, we both literally went 'OH YES!' It was SO different to what we had been sleeping on. You can see in the pic above how substantial it is (and it's lovely design!), and it has 100% kept it's shape since we started sleeping on it. It has a firmness to it, but still feels like you kind of sink into it each night.

So with our mattress upgrade, it would have been ludicrous to then top it with the flimsy duvet and misshapen pillows we'd been using, so thankfully the lovely folk at Soak and Sleep were able to guide us on making our bed a truly luxurious place. On their website, you can tailor your choice of bedding to what kind of sleeper you are... side, back or front sleeper, cold or hot, allergy sufferer etc. We were advised to go with a pure wool duvet, which, as a natural material is great for temperature regulation - I often go to bed cold, but wake up in the night too hot, so it was perfect. As for pillows, it seems latex is winning out again! Same as the mattress, the latex pillows keep their shape amazingly well, and are hypoallergenic, (as is the wool duvet) which is useful for my asthma.

Last but not least, the bed sheets. Again, I've always been a bit of a cheapskate when it comes to this, but NO MORE! 100% French Linen is the only way to go! I can't believe I've cheated myself out of sleeping between anything less. It feels amazing, it is breathable, again helping with temp control, and there is no need to iron it! added bonus! I'm totally in love with this Blush Pink set I went for, I can't stop looking at it! :)

Doing this bed upgrade has honestly opened my eyes to how important a good mattress and bedding is. Maybe I'm just getting old, but it feels like a real priority to have a super comfy bed to retreat to after a long, stressful day!

The entire bedroom has had a bit of a makeover, although it is not complete yet. We are still working out storage options and additional furniture etc. But we did strip off the lining paper that was painted a deep purple and repainted in white, We then got rid of the dark blue carpet and replaced it with this white laminate flooring. As it's a loft conversion, there were no nice floorboards under the carpet, hence the laminate, but I've honestly surprised myself with how pleased I am with it! It has completely transformed the space. I will probably repaint the pink sloping wall, and we need things like a new light fitting, a new door and window coverings, but for now, just making those small changes has made it a completely different room to what it was. Of course I forgot to take any decent 'before' pics (again!) although below is a terrible phone pic from when we viewed the property, and a few 'in progress' ones when I was stripping the walls!

What a difference a lick of paint and a new floor can make right?! The only furniture I've added to the room so far are the little side tables which I got from Nordic House.

Things are slowly taking shape round here! There's still lots to do, but at least we now have a lovely, comfy place to retire to after days of decorating! Thank you so much to Soak and Sleep and Sleepbear for their help with upgrading our bed - I know I will continue to opt for better quality when it comes to bedding from now on!

oh, and if you fancy upgrading too, Sleepbear have a £50 off discount code until January 31st, see their website for the code, and Soak and Sleep are in the final week of their sale so take a peek for some bargains!

“Nick and I lay on it. It was very weird, but good weird... No springs were digging in, and however I laid myself I felt supported.....”

I actually have been having real bad issues with my leg after falling down some stairs and nothing has been helping it until now.

Sleeping Better For Health

Getting a good nights sleep is very much a daily priority with me. If I sleep well then my day is easier to tackle, if I don't sleep well then chances are I will be less efficient. As I am a morning person, I like to get up to go training or just do some tasks before I head off to work. With that in mind going to bed late isn't really an option, if for any reason I do then it will impact going forward. Getting the right mattress is also imperative and that is why I love my new Sleepbear mattress*.

I do go through random patches where I suffer from insomnia. I had a bad spell of it when I was around 12/13, I kept putting so much pressure on myself to fall asleep that I suddenly couldn't, and would lay awake for hours. Now it happens sporadically but I try to stick to a clear routine to help tackle it.

If like me you do a variety of training for fitness, your body needs rest to catch up with itself. If you constantly do something everyday then chances are you're going to ache, so you need a decent bed to support you. I was contacted by Sleepbear and sent a new mattress, bizarrely only after having the 'we could do with a new mattress' chat with hubby. It was the perfect time. I suddenly started to feel old because I actually felt excited about getting a new mattress. What had I become?!

The mattress from Sleepbear was memory foam which was not like our old one. We removed our previous mattress popped the mattress on, left it so it could revive itself after being in the packing, then both Nick and I lay on it. It was very weird, but good weird... No springs were digging in, and however I laid myself I felt supported. I actually have been having real bad issues with my leg after falling down some stairs and nothing has been helping it until now.

Before the injury I would be up at 6am, out of bed, running gear on and off I'd go. I'd get back, shower and head out for my day. I have kicked the day into gear and sleeping well is so so important to get you off on the right start. As mentioned if you have done a lot of exercise such as a 5k, then swam or been cycling over the week, chances are you will be looking forward to getting into bed! Combining a good bedtime routine and also a comfortable and supportive place to sleep, you will see numerous benefits to your days, let alone to your fitness.

What can you expect? Well I am not saying you will become a Paula Radcliffe over night, but you will have far more energy, be alert and more importantly feel rested and refreshed. I haven't slept in the SleepBear bed for too long but I am wondering why we didn't have memory foam before?!

My bedtime routine.

7pm - I will have had my dinner by this point and will be starting to think about prepping my food for tomorrow.

7.45pm - pack my bag for work tomorrow and lay out clothes.

8pm - get my running gear ready to grab first thing... Including socks, knickers and trainers so I don't have to hunt for them in the dark

8.15pm - Remove make up and have a hot bubble bath. I light candles or burn lavender oils to begin the relaxation process.

8.45pm - I get into my pyjamas

9pm - I might catch up on an episode of something like Big Bang Theory just to briefly switch off. Or I may use this time to chat to hubby

9.30pm - I head up to bed and start reading a book. I sometimes light some candles to bring the lighting down and relax me.

10pm - I dab some lavender oil on my pillow, put my book down, set my alarm, blow out the candles and turn in for the night.

How do you sleep? Have you changed your sleeping habits for fitness?
