Frequently asked questions

HOW FIRM IS THE SLEEPBEAR MATTRESS?
We've designed the Sleepbear mattress to support a wide range of sleepers, to ensure correct spine alignment to relax muscles and provide healthy sleep. Our customers find the Sleepbear mattress is neither too soft nor too firm, but is just right - we say it's firm but sumptuous, so in traditional terms that's 'medium/firm'.

Support is what is most important when considering a mattress that's right for you. A traditional firmness rating of 'Soft, Medium or Firm' is an old approach taken by many mattress retailers so they can sell a shop full of different models. Instead we've engineered just one mattress, with a layered construction to provide the perfect amount of comfort and support.

Sleepbear has been dynamic fatigue tested to simulate 10 years of use, for sleepers with a combined weight of up to 32 stone (204kg).

WHAT MAKES SLEEPBEAR BETTER THAN OTHER MATTRESSES?

Simple answer, the Sleepbear mattress & pillow contain pure latex.

Latex is a premium product that costs more than synthetic alternatives or 'new generation' foams that other brands use instead. We think our unique combination of latex and memory foam makes the best mattress you'll ever buy.

Why does latex cost more? It's main component is the natural sap of the rubber tree, which is sustainably harvested before it begins the long process to become the latex used in our mattress. The result, what we and many others believe is the best sleep surface around, it's natural qualities are unrivalled by any other alternatives.

In addition to that, our fabrics are heavier than those used by other brands, and they also contain LYCRA®. This gives Sleepbear its premium finishing touch.

That's not all, here at Sleepbear we want to give something back. Each year, a percentage of the proceeds from our Sleepbear mattress sales will go directly to Polar Bears International to help them support the conservation of polar bears. Click here to read more.

WHAT MAKES LATEX THE BEST SLEEP SURFACE?

We use pure latex in the Sleepbear mattress, the real deal. Be wary of other brands using synthetic alternatives, but claiming the same benefits.

Latex is a premium product and it doesn't come cheap, but we settled for nothing less than the best when designing the Sleepbear mattress and pillow.

Temperature control: It does not retain heat, like a traditional memory foam mattress or pillow does. It's cool to the touch and is even perforated for additional airflow. You'll stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Bounce: It has a very high natural elasticity which gives a unique feel like no other foam. It gives the mattress it's springy feel and special bounce. It responds fast which means that moving during the night is effortless.

Comfort: It works in a special way that offers unrivalled weight distribution. The more pressure you apply, the more it pushes back - it's basically like sleeping on a cloud,

Breathable: It has an open cell structure that's full of millions of tiny air bubbles, for the ultimate in breathabilty and moisture control.

Durable: It's an incredibly resilient material that lasts up to 3x longer than a conventional mattress. We've tested our mattress by simulating 10 years of use, and it only dipped by 1.5mm (the thickness of a penny).

Healthy: It's hypoallergenic as it naturally makes for a hostile environment for dust mites to exist, it's also resistant to mould.

DO YOU USE DUNLOP OR TALALAY LATEX?

We use Dunlop latex in our Sleepbear mattress and pillows.

This is because Dunlop latex is denser than Talalay, which makes it a bit firmer, heavier and more durable.

The manufacturing process of Dunlop latex, which has been used since 1929:

  1. The rubber sap is sustainably harvested from the Havea tree.
  2. Thick rubber sap is whipped into a froth in a centrifuge.
  3. The sap is poured into a mould, the mould is covered and steam baked.
  4. Natural sediments in the mixture settle to the bottom of the mould making Dunlop layers slightly firmer on the bottom side.

WHAT IS THE SLEEPBEAR MATTRESS MADE OF?

The Sleepbear mattress is made up of three layers:

Top layer of pure latex: the real deal. This gives bounce, so you don’t get that 'stuck in a rut' feeling associated with traditional memory foam mattresses . The latex is also perforated, which along with it's natural cooling properties, ensures you don’t over-heat as you sleep.

Mid layer of contouring and responsive memory foam: engineered to give total body support no matter your sleeping position.

Base layer of high density foam: this is what gives your mattress support and durability - the foundation to the Sleepbear mattress.

The cover: lovingly made in Britain using premium fabrics sourced from Belgium: the perfect way to finish the Sleepbear mattress.

CAN THE SLEEPBEAR MATTRESS HELP WITH BACK PAIN?

We haven’t conducted our own medical tests to establish this, but we do know the Sleepbear mattress supports sleepers very effectively for a healthy nights sleep. You can read our customer reviews here.

WILL SLEEPBEAR FIT STANDARD SHEETS?

The Sleepbear will fit most standard UK sheet sizes, but if you're unsure - get the deep fitted variety.

The Sleepbear mattress is 25cm (or 10 inches) deep - made up of 4cm Latex, 6cm memory foam, 15cm support foam.

Why? we beleive this is the perfect depth.

WHY DO YOU SELL ONLY ONE MATTRESS?

Offering only one product choice is a core part of our philosophy. We believe that the process of buying a new mattress can be way too complicated.

So much effort has gone into designing and engineering the Sleepbear, that we're completely confident it’s just right. Which is why we offer a 100 day no hassle return policy.

If you don't like it, we'll pick it up from you at no cost and refund you.

HOW IS THE SLEEPBEAR MATTRESS PACKAGED?

Sleepbear is gently compressed and then rolled, packed into a portable box which is the full width of the mattress you've ordered. When opened promptly, the Sleepbear will recover fast - within minutes.

And we're going to let you into a secret… we don’t fold the Sleepbear before it’s rolled like other's do. Folding and then rolling the mattress like Eve, Simba & Casper do, is like folding your favourite wall poster before you roll it - it's never going to recover 100% afterwards.

Box dimensions:

Single: 40 x 40 x 100cm

Double, EU Double, King: 40 x 40 x 160cm

EU King, Super King: 40 x 40 x 190cm

The Sleepbear mattress weighs from 21kg's for a Single, up to 42kg's for a Super King.

WHERE IS THE SLEEPBEAR MATTRESS MADE?

The Sleepbear mattress and pillows are proudly made in Britain.

HOW DOES THE 10-YEAR GUARANTEE WORK?

Sleepbear 10-year mattress guarantee

We are proud to offer a 10 Year guarantee on our mattress as it meets the highest standards for domestic use.

Please note that this guarantee is provided free of charge and in addition to the rights given to you by the law. Please note also that our 10-year guarantee operates in accordance with the terms and conditions stated below.

What does the guarantee cover?

This guarantee covers defects in materials and workmanship in the following components of a SLEEPBEAR mattress during normal domestic use only:

  • Deterioration which causes the mattress to have a visible indentation or sag greater than one inch, as long as that indentation or sag has not resulted from use of an improper or unsupportive foundation.
  • Any physical flaw in the mattress that causes the foam material to split or crack, as long as the mattress has only been used for normal domestic use and has not been handled improperly.
  • Any manufacturing defect in the zipper assembly or the fabric of the mattress cover.

And, what the guarantee does not cover?

If it does not fall into one of the categories above in the ‘What does the guarantee cover?'  section, then it is not covered by our guarantee.

By way of example of what is not covered, please see the following list (although there can be other things too which are not covered):

  • A normal increase in the softness of the foam pressure-relieving material which does not affect the pressure-relieving qualities of the mattress.
  • Comfort preference.
  • Abnormal use.
  • Use other than normal domestic use.
  • Physical abuse or damage to mattress which causes defects such as burns, cuts, tears, liquid damage or stains.
  • Replacement of a SLEEPBEAR mattress due to defective cover (so that, for example, if you purchase a mattress and only the cover is defective, then we might only replace the cover and not the whole mattress).
  • Any mattress (whether manufactured by SLEEPBEAR or not) sold by a reseller who is not an authorised SLEEPBEAR reseller.
  • Any mattress sold “as-is”, “preconditioned”, “reconditioned”, “used”, “comfort return”, “returned”, “previously owned”, or any other similar wording indicating that the mattress is not “new” or of “first quality”, or has previously been purchased or used by someone else.

When does the guarantee start?

The guarantee starts on the date of delivery of the mattress and lasts until the end of 10 years from that date.

What should you do if you believe you have a claim under the guarantee?

If you believe there is a defect which is covered by this guarantee, you should get in touch with our customer service team and they will:

  • Ask for a description and any evidence of the defect which you believe is covered by the guarantee;
  • Arrange pick up for your defective mattress;
  • Decide if SLEEPBEAR will cover the shipping costs required to return your mattress based on if you have a valid claim under the guarantee.

What do we do when we get all this from you?

When we receive from you the mattress and information above, we will cross-examine the mattress. We will decide at our sole reasonable discretion if it is covered under the guarantee.

If it is covered by the guarantee, we will:

  • (at our sole discretion) either repair the defective mattress or replace it with the same or a comparable mattress;
  • pay the costs of repairs, spare parts, labour, travel, postage, repair and delivery; and
  • ship the repaired or replaced mattress back to you.

If it is not covered by the guarantee, we will ask you if you want us to return the mattress to you (at your cost) or dispose of the mattress (both at your cost).

What if you have a valid claim under the guarantee and you want an upgraded mattress?

If your mattress is covered by the guarantee and you want to replace it with a more expensive SLEEPBEAR mattress, then please email us at hello@sleepbear.co.uk  however you will be required to pay the difference between the original purchase price of the mattress and that of the upgrade mattress.

What guarantee applies to a replaced or repaired mattress or an upgrade mattress?

A replaced or repaired mattress that is not an upgrade mattress is subject to the same limited mattress guarantee as the original mattress. For example, if you obtain a replaced or repaired mattress that is the same style and price as the original mattress, then the guarantee period of the replaced or repaired mattress begins from the date of delivery of the original mattress.

If you purchase an upgrade mattress however, then you obtain a new limited mattress guarantee and the 10-year guarantee starts on the delivery date of the upgrade mattress.

Who operates this guarantee?

The guarantee is operated by:

SLEEPBEAR LIMITED, 8 Church Green East, Redditch B98 8BP

Please contact our Customer Service at hello@sleepbear.co.uk to initiate a Guarantee claim. We cannot take into account any other channels for a valid Guarantee claim.

WHAT’S THE 100 NIGHT HASSLE-FREE RETURNS POLICY?

It’s simple: try the mattress in the comfort of your home for up to 100 nights. If you’re unhappy with it for any reason, get in touch by email or phone and we’ll arrange for a collection and refund the full amount.

(And don’t worry – you don’t need to get the mattress back into the box to return it!)

DOES THE SLEEPBEAR WORK WITH ALL BED TYPES?

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE RETURNED MATTRESSES?

We've teamed up with the British Heart Foundation, who collect any mattresses returned under our 100 Night Trial.

On the odd occasion this isn't possible due to location, returned mattresses are collected by a specialist mattress reclycler.

HOW CAN I CLEAN MY SLEEPBEAR?
Spot cleaning the Sleepbear cover is fine, but the cover shouldn’t be removed for washing as it hasn’t been designed for this.
DO YOU HAVE A SHOWROOM?

Sleepbear is online only. Showrooms cost money which we would have to pass on to the customer in the price of our mattress. So we sell direct to you and encourage you to try Sleepbear in the comfort of your own home with the reassurance of our 100-night sleep trial.

IS SLEEPBEAR ANTI-DUST MITE?

While we haven’t conducted our own scientific tests on this, we do know that dust mites need a habitat and a food source and our foams and cover don’t provide that. There is research published online that claims latex & memory foam is inherently anti-microbial, though we haven’t independently tested this.

DO I NEED TO TURN MY SLEEPBEAR?

The Sleepbear mattress in non-turn, so you won't have to worry about this. We do suggest however, that you rotate your Sleepbear length-ways every 3 months for the first year to maintain proper shape during your Sleepbear's break-in period, and to extend it’s lifetime.

WILL MY MATTRESS DIP OR SAG?

The Sleepbear mattress has been rigoruosly fatigue tested to simulate 10 years of use. What we learnt from this, is that on average our mattress will lose 1.5mm after 10 years of use.

However, due to the nature of the materials within the mattress, every foam mattress will lose some of its firmness over the length of its life time.

This is particularly true if the same side of a mattress is used each night without any rotation of the mattress.

The sag or dip that can be within the mattress is caused due to compression of the foam. It’s very similar to receiving a new sofa, for the first week the cushions on the sofa may look lovely and plump, but when you sit on it, you feel like you’re just resting on top of the firm cushions. After a few weeks, cushions ‘bed in’ and you get a more comfortable experience.

In short, all foams will compress at some point, it is more important to assess the percentage or amount of compression.

How far will my mattress compress?

The industry accepted standard is 2cm. Which means that any idents of 2cm that don’t return to their original position are considered acceptable.

How can I reduce compression and avoid dips?

One way is to make sure you rotate your mattress regularly, once a month if possible. This will help to even out the wear.

All foams and upholstery layers will have a tolerance of 2cm compression over time. This is not always a negative, you need to make sure that you can even out this wear as best as possible by rotating where possible. Simply using your mattress night after night without any monthly maintenance will only speed up and exacerbate the compression and dips that may occur..
