Here at Sleepbear, we’re on a mission to create the world’s greatest sleep experience, whilst instigating a global change in the way people purchase and consume mattresses. Many mattresses are churned out on a grand scale, some lasting only a few years before proving unfit for purpose and ending up in landfill. Many mattresses are packed full of dysfunctional layers, used purely as a marketing ploy in an attempt to add value. Many mattresses also have a grossly inflated markup, as people not only pay for the privilege of purchasing in a shop but also for a brand name, despite the dwindling quality and attention to detail.
We are a family-run business, meaning that each and every one of our mattresses is handcrafted under our watchful eye here in Britain, only being created after you’ve placed your order. The Sleepbear mattress is built based upon scientific research, and lots of good old-fashioned human testing!
Latex is the very best sleep-surface currently known to man, as it features temperature control, breathability, high elasticity (bounce!), is hypo-allergenic and lasts up to 3 times longer than other mattress types. We simulated 10 years of use on our mattress, and it only settled by a mere 1.5mm – which is as thin as a penny!
Your mattress starts out in life as part of a sustainable Hevea rubber tree plantation. Sap is tapped to flow from the tree, before being organically harvested for latex foam. These rubber tree plantations are all managed carefully to ensure continued growth of new trees, and the number of trees tapped for a King size Sleepbear mattress will remove up to 28 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in just 1 year! The factory that produces our latex also utilises 100% green energy, and recycles 95% of the water they use during production.
Once the latex has been created using the Dunlop process (firmer and more durable than Talalay), we then get to work on baking your sumptuous Sleepbear cake latex layer. The latex formula is whisked like an egg white to create a light and fluffy mixture. Minuscule air bubbles are produced, to give the latex its breathable quality. The formula is poured into moulds, with pins that ensure the latex is baked or vulcanized, all the way through. Residual amounts of liquid latex are washed away, and the latex foam is then dried by hot air before its ready to use. The finished latex is then sent to our British factory as the cherry on top of every Sleepbear, where your mattress and pillows are brought to life!
The Sleepbear experience doesn’t just end once your mattress is delivered. We love hearing from the bears (that’s you!) and proudly display your feedback on our website. The purchase of every mattress also contributes towards saving our sea ice and polar bears, as we donate to our partner charity Polar Bears International. We are also active across all social media channels, sharing helpful tips on everything from sleep hygiene to hygge, and you can feature too just by using the hashtag #MySleepbear. Oh, and of course if you did wish to part ways with your Sleepbear, we are teamed up with the British Heart Foundation, who will collect and make best use of your mattress within your 50 day trial period.
